L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz classic fantasy should not to be missed by all
Wizard of OZ fans. The wonderful cast captures the magic of this timeless show with its unforgettable characters and strong values. In the unique setting at the Coronado Playhouse the magic unfolds about the tale of wicked witches, good witches, humbug wizards, munchkins, Ozians, talking trees, and flying monkeys. Interesting facts about the 1939 MGM blockbuster film of the story’s popular musical version are listed in the
director's notes are well worth reading.
Dorothy Gale’s (Sarah Vincelett) loving smiles and personality together with her adorable dog, Toto takes us out of Kansas and Over the Rainbow via a twister that promptly lands her house on the Wicked Witch of the East. The sugary Glinda with her beautiful voice
(Rebecca Seubert), A.K.A. the Good Witch of the North is delighted at this. The adorable little Munchkins deem Dorothy a national heroine for ridding them of their tyrant while mocking the witch’s passing with
Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead. But the Wicked Witch’s sister, the creepy Wicked Witch of the West
(Chrissy Burns), is not nearly so fond of the new visitor, especially when she sees Dorothy wearing her deceased sister’s magical ruby slippers!
With an enemy like that, the safest thing for Dorothy is to get back to Kansas and the mysterious Wizard of Oz
(Brain P. Evans) who lives in the Emerald City is the one to swing all this. So the journey down the Yellow Brick Road begins towards the Emerald City leading Dorothy to a trio of loyal friends. The clever but brainless Scarecrow
(Erick L. Sundquist), the loving but heartless Tin Man (Billy Stevens) and a great performance by
(Brett Daniels) as the brave but cowardly Lion. Together they help Dorothy face the frightening Wizard, initially a cleverly done masked projection and the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy’s return to Uncle Henry
(Martin M. White) and auntie Em (Rebecca Seubert) in Kansas promises to be a delightful journey with lots of adventures on the way.
Director D. Larry Steckling’s fine production of this classic is highlighted with great ensemble numbers including the dancing Jitterbugs choreographed by
Chrissy Burns who gives an outstanding performance as the Wicked Witch of the West as well. The
scenes are cleverly captured with several periactoids as the stage is fairly small. Musical
Director Dan Greenbush expertly plays on the piano for the entire show. The show has
ample attention to detail and certainly captures the audience’s imagination whisking them all off to the magical land of OZ.
Performs through December 19, 2004.
