Sentimental Journey USO-Style Touring Show by Cooperative Show Company
This Sentimental Journey to America of the 1940s and
back again begins in the fictional Kilroy’s Korner, a modern-day bar decorated
to resemble the World War II era. A local college girl earns herself a job as a
waitress, and begins interviewing the guests for a term paper she is writing,
delving into the time period of her grandfather who died during the
war. The guests, quite naturally, are more than willing to help, and soon they
are reminiscing about the good times and the bad, singing and dancing to the old songs, and transporting
us back to the days of USO shows, the Andrews Sisters, and Abbott and Costello.Produced by a new local touring production, the show features several talented, charming, and entertaining cast members who take us back in time in a variety of engaging and sometimes touching ways. Memorable hit after hit, like Mr. Sandman, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B, I’ll Be Seeing You, Blue Skies, Night and Day, Give My Regards to Broadway, In the Mood, and It Don’t Mean a Thing (if It Ain’t Got That Swing), make every scene an endearing piece of nostalgia. The beautiful voices, harmonies, and style of the Andrews Sisters (Marla Worm, Sarah Vincelett, and Lia Metz) take center stage through many of the biggest hits of yesteryear. The waitress (Chrissy Burns) becomes a sultry singing diva with such flirtatious classics as My Heart Belongs to Daddy and Bewitched, with Chrissy’s voice really soaring in the lovely ballad I’ll Be Seeing You. The GI’s chime in with Steppin’ Out With My Baby, Timmy Simpson and Brandon Pohl become a hilarious Abbott and Costello trying to figure out Who’s on First, and the boys and girls teamed up for a couple of the swinginest scenes with their dynamic dancing to It Don’t Mean a Thing and In the Mood. The silver-haired veterans in Kilroy’s Korner get the Sentimental Journey rolling by introducing their young waitress to some crooning of the old classics along with some great dancing by Patty Fay. And the evening ends with the singing of patriotic standards like Yankee Doodle, You’re a Grand Old Flag, and This is My Country, concluding with a sing-along to the modern patriotic classic God Bless the U.S.A. Filled with so many unforgettable songs from the Forties, terrific swing dancing choreographed by Chrissy Burns, and remarkable singing, this slice of Americana is a delightful and sure-to-please patriotic extravaganza.
