Pets! -- The Musical
by Full Circle Theatre Company

Pets! Whether dogs, cats, birds, rats, fish, frogs, snakes, or iguanas, they just seem to wiggle their way into our hearts. So it’s about time someone put together a musical revue honoring our feathered, furry, slimy, and scaly friends. Scenes include puppies in a pet store vying for the attention of an unsuspecting shopper, an enterprising woman whose business is to walk ze dogs (about eight of them at a time!), a dog who debates devouring an unattended bagel on the piano, animals who spend their lives helping humans, as well as Socks Clinton and his cushy life in the White House.

This entertaining production is put on by the Full Circle Theatre Company – a theatre group founded two years ago to offer young actors an opportunity to perform alongside professional actors, and this cast includes great talent of all ages.

Darlene Cleary earns a laugh every time she waddles up onto the stage with her bouquet of dog leashes pulling her every which way as each dog has its own nose to follow. Sonya Bender’s beautiful voice sings of leaving her Dear Max dog that she has grown up with in order to go off to college. Megan Maher is the adorable, soon to be in trouble, dog who talks herself into believing that the bagel on the piano is hers. Melanie Glancy is Socks the cat – living it up with the Clinton family (Bill, Hillary, Chelsea …… Monica??!) until Buddy disrupts his blissful life. And in one of the shows most original and touching numbers, new homeowners Lizette Kent and Walt Stewart stumble upon the grave of a pet left behind in the backyard and discuss whether they should build over it or provide Perpetual Care to this beloved pet of someone they never knew.

And then there are some of the more exotic, or “peculiar,” pets. Christine Garver is the cute little girl who enthusiastically tries to save Franklin the turtle from the fateful flush of no return. And Director Ann Boutelle becomes a dancing, hot-blooded, Latino iguana desperately pining for his owners to get him an iguanette.

This engaging little production is topped off with Claudia S. Caudel’s charming masks and costumes that bring all these pets to life for all us humans to enjoy, reminding us of those special pets who have touched our lives over the years.
