Little Shop of Horrors
by J*Company

Karen Gorodzinsky and Adam Covalt There's something big, green, leafy, and hungry lurking on the J*Company stage these days, and young actors are disappearing left and right. What can you do to save them? Go cheer them on if you get the chance. But in any event, no matter what you do, and no matter how hard they plead, and no matter what they may offer you – Don’t Feed the Plants!!!

Yes, fellow humans/future plant food, the green menace has arrived, and it’s in the form of a man-eating Venus Flytrap-like alien with an unquenchable thirst for fresh flesh. The plant lands in the hands of Seymour – a poor, meek flower shop worker from skid row. A lucky break, or a tragic accident of fate?

This musical spoof of early sci-fi films is a comedy gem full of hilarious characters, situations, and music. And it’s currently getting an exciting, high-energy performance at J*Company with a stellar cast including Adam Covalt as the nerdy Seymour who becomes a botanical sensation with his discovery of the mysterious flytrap. But what price is he willing to pay for his newfound fame??? Adam’s awkward walk, stance, and mannerisms are terrific for the part, and he’s got a fantastic voice to boot.

Not to be outdone is his counterpart Audrey. Karen Gorodzinsky, who has been participating in J*Company since its beginning ten years ago, demonstrates her acting experience and talent (which includes an unbelievable voice) in this choice role – a dumb blonde with low self-esteem and really bad taste in men who dreams of getting out of Skid Row and moving to Somewhere That’s Green with a nice guy, kinda like Seymour.

Other incredible voices and comedic actors include some remarkable solos and harmonizations by the three Ronnettes (Tatiana Holthaus, Tiffany Scarritt, and Tess Mengle) who doo-wop and sha-boom us throughout as both amusing narrators and chatty skid row residents.

Great work by the sinisterly entertaining voice of the plant named Audrey II (Perry Lee), an insanely sadistic dentist (Justin Peck), a to-greedy-for-his-own-good flower shop owner (Phillip Bowen), and a couple dozen street urchins round out this terrific cast. In a brilliant touch, Director Becky Cherlin had the urchins loitering and stumbling and panhandling among the audience members before the show and during intermission, drawing us completely into skid row. Backed up by a crack band (conducted by Andy Ingersoll), this group kept the comedy and electricity blooming throughout!

Performance Dates: May 29 – June 1, 2003
