Babe The Sheep-Pig
by San Diego Junior Theatre

Erin Burke as Amelia BedeliaIt’s that most unlikely hero who became a screen legend who is now live on our local stages for the first time courtesy of San Diego Junior Theatre. Babe the Sheep-Pig tries to save his bacon and his owner’s pride in this short and sweet production.

The story begins with baby Babe being played by a real little pig who fatefully gets won by Farmer Hogget. From there the part of the pig is played by Jacob Sampson who immediately starts picking up on the rules of the farm and on his fellow farm animals, using his personality and politeness to charm the humans, the sheepdogs, and the sheep themselves – friends that will prove instrumental as he tries to avoid the more typical pig fate on a plate.

Junior Theatre’s young and enthusiastic cast includes Anthony Kaneaster as man of few words Farmer Hogget, Ariana Dickey as his wife of many more words, the nurturing mother sheepdog Fly (Maddy Bersin), and Rachel Rogov as the “I’ll be dipped!” sheep leader named Ma. Ma and her clan of rhyming sheep are a hoot with their nicely done sheepish voices, But the biggest scene goes to the birds – a kickline of ducks who dance with big webbed feet.

Director Will Neblett, Costume Designer Shulamit Nelson, and Set Designer Heidi Sievers complete the illusion with their great work of bringing the barnyard to the theatre.

Performs through July 18, 2004.
