Anything Goes
by Rancho Buena Vista High School

Jackson Perez and Phoebe SilvaIt’s Anything Goes when this quirky cruise ship embarks on its transatlantic crossing, with a crew that includes singing sensation Reno Sweeney, her four fallen Angels, public enemies in disguise, and devoted lover Billy Crocker who will do anything, and pretend to be anyone, before he lets his true love Hope Harcourt marry the wrong man.

This Cole Porter favorite received a snappy, uplifting, enthusiastic retelling by the Rancho Buena Vista High School drama department – a high school filled with an unbelievable amount of talent. That talent sang and tapped on magnificent sets worthy of them – sets rented from Performance Riverside who purchased them right from Broadway. The whole package made for one of the most impressive high school productions ever!

As singing star Reno Sweeney, Phoebe Silva launches the show serenading Billy Crocker with I Get a Kick Out of You, and then never lets up as she electrifies the stage throughout with her powerful voice, saucy personality, and dance numbers both big and small. Small ones like You’re the Top with her friend (and real-life brother) Billy (Jacob Silva) and the amusing favorite Friendship with Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin (Jackson Perez). Big ones like the title song Anything Goes and the energizing Blow, Gabriel, Blow. Those big numbers feature an amazing ensemble tapping out Renee M. Kollar’s demanding choreography with such enthusiasm and precision timing, you’d think they’d been dancing together for years. In truth, only a handful of them even had dance experience before the show – a tribute to Kollar and the talent and dedication of the cast.

Other outstanding moments and performances include the adorable debutante Hope Harcourt (Whitney Fortmueller) being aggressively courted by master-of-disguise Billy in their charming De-Lovely duet. Evelyn Oakleigh (Zach Fishinger) is a riot as the quirky Brit who has “hot pants” for American expressions and whose straight-man exterior has a hot-blooded “Gypsy” in him. Equally hilarious is the tough Public Enemy #13 Moonface Martin (Jackson Perez) who has a tweeting and dancing “Blue Bird” in him. Kerry Hammel and Adam Rosko share a couple of great scenes as aging wooers Mrs. Harcourt and Billy’s boss, Elisha Whitney. And CarlyAnn Oquendo is aptly tarty as she seduces sailors as the situation demands in order to save her roommate Moonface.

Director Mark Scott challenging production standards paid off with a sterling production and thoroughly entertaining evening of musical theatre.
