2001 - 2002 San Diego Playbill
Youth "Billie" Awards

All the winners! Last June, San Diego Playbill announced the winners of the First Annual San Diego Playbill "Billie" Awards to honor outstanding work in local theatre. At that time, only seven youth theatre performances had been reviewed, and potential award winners competed directly against professional theatre groups for the awards. This year, seventeen youth productions were reviewed from eight different youth theatre companies, and we decided that Youth Theatre should be done as a class unto themselves, with youth performers compared to their peers.

In addition to the youth who performed in the youth theatre companies, any minor (under age 18) who performed at any theatre was also considered for the awards, as well as the adults who participated in the youth theatre productions backstage (directors, set designers, costume designers, etc.). All in all, artists from 35 different shows at 18 different theatres have been considered for this year's awards.

Rob Hopper, Becky Cherlin, and Jennifer Bendelstein Our youth productions represent the future of our professional theatre world and should be recognized for their outstanding achievements. We hope that this new awards ceremony will draw more interest and support to our local youth theatres. But, most importantly, we simply wanted to congratulate and thank some of the amazing artists who contributed so much to our theatre entertainment over the past year.

Below is a complete list of this year's winners. Please note that the winners will be formally presented with their awards at a ceremony honoring their accomplishments on Monday, July 1 at the Granite Hills High School Little Theatre, home of the Granite Hills Acting Workshop and of Youth Summerstock Theatre for more than thirty years. If you are interested in attending the awards ceremony and have not received an e-mailed invitation, please e-mail me and let me know. Until June 17, only award winners and other invited guests will be able to RSVP. Tickets will run $8.00 apiece (award winners and up to two guests can attend at no charge). Seating is limited, and the sooner we hear from you, the better the chances.
