THE TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL
“CABARET”

Based on the play by John Van Druten
and stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander, Lyrics by Fred Ebb

Brian Evans, Michael Williams, and Alisa WilliamsOnStage Playhouse in Chula Vista, known for taking risks on stage,! is now taking on the challenging – and risqué – musical “Cabaret”.  The setting is a seamy underground burlesque club in pre-World War II Berlin.
Raylene J. Wall, who directed the multi award-winning “Godspell” at OnStage will head up an impressive production team to bring these stories to life.  Dan Greenbush (“Godspell”, “Side by Side by Sondheim”) will serve as the Musical Director and Alisa Williams (“Once Upon a Mattress”, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”) will provide her expertise as Choreographer.  Serving as a first-time Producer at OnStage Playhouse will be Nadine Lindseth.
Based on the play “I Am a Camera” (which in turn was based on Christopher Isherwood’s autobiographical “Berlin Stories”), Harold Prince’s “Cabaret” opened on Broadway in 1966.  Much different than the stage version, the 1972 Bob Fosse film won eight Oscars and starred Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles.  In 1998,  a London revival made its way to Broadway, winning four Tony s.
Set in 1930’s Berlin , “Cabaret” microcosmically represents the effects of the Nazi’s rise to power.  The setting is primarily in the boarding house of Fraulein Schneider, while the world of the Kit Kat Klub provides a running musical commentary – a mixture of comedy, satire, hedonism and truth.  The music of “Cabaret” ranges from up-tempo pieces, including the raucous opener “Willkommen” and the unforgettable “Cabaret”, to lesser-known yet hauntingly beautiful ballads, including “Tomorrow Belongs to Me”.  The choreography encompasses the seductively naughty, the humorously innocent and everything in between.
Headlining the cast will be Alisa Williams as Sally Bowles and Michael Williams as the Emcee.   The cast also features Brian Evans as Clifford Bradshaw, Kate Hewitt as Fraulein Schneider, Ralph Johnson as Herr Schultz, Tom Fitzpatrick as Ernst Ludwig, Jessica Brandon as Fraulein Kost, and an ensemble of ten (10) talented actor/dancer/singers playing multiple roles: David Ainsworth, Darrell Allbritton, Manuel Bejarano, Katy Calvin, Marcus Cortez, Tom Fitzpatrick, Michele Guisti, Dave Hibler, Dawn Marie Himlin, Charley Miller, Tamara Rhea and Meredith Russo.
While an entertaining musical, “Cabaret” contains adult themes and situations and is not recommended for those under 17 years of age.  The production is produced by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark Musical Library, Inc.
All ticket prices will be $20.00.  Special rates are available for groups of ten or more by contacting Betsy Keller via the theatre contact information below.  Curtain times are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.
