Jack manages a country estate.  When he visits his friend Algernon in the city, he uses the name Ernest.  He is very attracted to Algernon's cousin Gwendolyn, who will only marry someone named Ernest.  Algernon is very intrigued with Jack's young ward Cecily, and goes to visit her under the pretense that he is Jack's mysterious brother Ernest.  Cecily is enthralled, and the two girls find they are both engaged to Ernest, who doesn't exist.
