Way gay holiday musical, "It's a Fabulous Life," next at Diversionary

Photo credit: Coast Highway Photography Diversionary Theatre will present the gay holiday musical It's a Fabulous Life as the third show of their 2006-2007 season. Previewing November 17 and opening November 18, this production is the West Coast premiere, which has started in Fort Lauderdale in 2003 and has also played Miami and Chicago.

It's a Fabulous Life uses the premise of It's a Wonderful Life – a young gay man wishes he hadn't been born gay, and an angel grants his wish! This show has it all – showboys, drag, dancing reindeer and a gospel singing dyke! The book is by David Sexton, with songs by Albert Evans and David Sexton, and additional music by Eric Alsford and Andrew Sargent.

This new holiday tradition comes with a bit of gay apparel! You get a madcap musical pageant that celebrates the season and that celebrates real family values, as our gay hero, Joe, faces troubles Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey never dreamed of. As Joe rehearses "Randolph the Rainbow Reindeer," he is driven to the brink of despair by family, church, and political tides. But with a bit of intervention from beyond, It's a Fabulous Life builds to an unforgettable holiday climax. With musical numbers like "The Pole Got Hot!," "Don't Drag Me Through the Holidays Again," "Great to Be Straight" and "Lavender," you'll "Jingle All the Way" home!

Diversionary's production will be directed and choreographed by David Brannen, with musical direction by Steven Withers. The 11-member cast features C.J. Altarejos, Zachary Bryant, Eric Dowdy, Tom Fitzpatrick, Barron Henzel, Aaron Marcotte, John Martin, Trevor Peringer, Victoria Roze, Jonathan Wexler, and Ole Kittleson as the angel. The design team includes Bret Young (sets), Cindy Kinnard (costumes) and Christian DeAngelis (lighting).

"This is the first Christmas show we've done in a while," said Dan Kirsch, Executive & Artistic Director of Diversionary. "The show has such heart, and we think it will become a new holiday tradition for our patrons."

Diversionary Theatre was started in 1986. The mission of the theatre is to produce plays with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes that portray characters in their complexity and diversity both historically and contemporarily.
