Broadway
Theater to open ONE NATION UNDER SONG
When
Vista
’s Broadway Theater opened it’s
doors in June of 2004, the first adult show in the space was a musical review
called, THE COMPOSERS. The
production was conceived, written and choreographed by Broadway Theater owner,
Randall Hickman. The show had
originally been produced months earlier in the Fallbrook Mission Theater, so
remounting the show was a relatively easy task.
It turns out that this move proved to be the key to the theater’s
success today. “I firmly believe
that had we not mounted a Musical Review as our first show, it would have taken
us up to two years to see the attendance we now enjoy”, states Hickman. “THE
COMPOSERS brought in patrons from all over
North
County
. At the end of every show the cast
would step outside and shake hands with the patrons as they left, (a practice
the actors still do today). The one
consistent comment we would hear was, ‘this is the most beautiful little
theater, I can’t wait to tell my friends about this place.’
THE COMPOSERS put our little theater on the map.
So why tamper with a good thing?”
Four years later the company is still staging a summer Musical Review.
In 2005 the theater staged a Broadway review.
Summer of 2006 was a review based on the music from the movies and this
year Hickman is tackling what he calls his most ambitious review to date; ONE
NATION UNDER SONG – 200 years of American Music.
ONE
NATION will chronicle, in song and dance, music from the 1800’s through today.
Hickman continues, “ ONE NATION UNDER SONG tackles, gospel, blues,
jazz, big band, rock and roll, country, and everything in between.
We have a HUGE costume budget, (as you can imagine), every era has its
own look and feel. I have been
telling friends that the real show is backstage.
Watching my actors change from one costume to another in less than 45
seconds is like watching ‘choreographed mayhem’. So
I am very lucky to have seven fantastic performers in this show.
The cast consists of Broadway Theater favorites,
(and real life twins), Shauna Hart Ostrom and Shelly Hart Breneman as
well as Gregory Starkey. All three are from Poway.
Rounding out the cast are Broadway Way
Theater newcomers Megan Barrow, Brian Imoto, Garrett Harris, and Kelly
Mustain all from San Diego. Hickman
is sharing choreography billing with Fallbrook Dance teacher, Alison Whitman.
“It’s huge show with a ton of dance.
Alison knows her stuff.” ONE
NATION UNDER SONG plays July 12th through August 12th –
Thursday’s through Sunday’s in the Broadway Theater.
If you’ve never been to the Broadway Theater and you want to check out
this production call early for seating. The
summer reviews have a tendancy to sell out 2 weeks in advance.
