THE THREEPENNY OPERA

Book by Bertolt Brecht

Music by Kurt Weill

Directed by Sam Woodhouse

San Diego Repertory Theatre is currently accepting submissions from ACTORS WHO SING, SINGERS WHO ACT, AND MUSICIANS. Actors and Singers who play musical instruments and musicians who act are especially desired, but not required. All performers are paid. Union and non-union performers welcome.

The Musical

The 20th century masterpiece “opera for beggars” is a singing and stinging portrait of a fat society on the eve of destruction.

Performance Schedule

Rehearsals Begin:            February 3, 2009

Performance Dates:            February 28- March 29, 2009

Performance Space:  Lyceum Space Theatre in Horton Plaza, downtown San Diego

ROLES FOR ACTORS WHO SING/SINGERS WHO ACT

ENSEMBLE

Six men and women, ages 18 – 60. Everyone sings to F. The part singing is not too complicated and not "beautiful". Lots of unison singing. Ideally a gamut of distinctive voice types like a human menagerie.

Each will sing and play multiple roles which will include:

-          Beggars and Crooked Cops

-          The thieves Money Matt, Hook-Finger Jacob, Robert the Saw, Wally the Weeper

-          The prostitutes Suky Tawdy, Betty, Dolly, Molly and Coaxer.

-          Reverend Kimball, who may be a beggar or thief himself.

MEN

Street Singer – age 25-55: Distinctive character voice. Baritone or Mezzo to E. Establishes the tone of the play by singing a shockingly brutal ballad in a matter-of-fact but pointed way. He sings the song “Mack the Knife” and sets all the scenes. Actor will also play additional roles.

Macheath – age 28 – 50: Tenor to High Ab. Mostly sings to F. Charismatic, vain, sexy, commanding, suave, manipulative, a dangerous bad-boy. Leader of a gang of criminals. A businessman, a lover and a thief known for violent crime.

Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum – age 40- 65: Voice like a dock foreman. Commanding. Baritone range to F. Sings C to F consistently. The Beggar King, employer and outfitter of all the beggars in London. A conniving, clever, corrupt and at times, buffoonish businessman who drinks a lot and trusts no one. Macheath’s arch rival.

Jackie “Tiger” Brown – age 30 – 55: High baritone to F#. Possibly a warm sounding tenor. Sycophantic. Seeks Mack's approval. Duet with Mack in Soldier's Song. Classical sound preferable as Messenger in 3rd Finale. London’s classically corrupt Chief of Police. A occasional sentimental buddy of Macheath from their days as soldiers in the Indian army, he shares the profits from the crimes he sanctions. Greedy.

Filch – age 20 – 40. Sings in chorus. One of Peachum’s least talented beggar pupils. A beggar who feels guilty stealing money from other people, which is his chief means of income.

Smith – age 25-50: Baritone. The warden at the jail where Macheath is incarcerated. He quickly arrests Macheath, then accepts the prisoner’s bribe for a more comfortable pair of handcuffs. Happy to consider the offer of a thousand-pound bribe for Macheath’s release.

WOMEN

Mrs. Celia Peachum – age 40- 65: Mezzo soprano to F. Strong comedic character voice. High combination voice. The equally corrupt, clever, and immoral business partner of her husband. Polly’s mother. Very good at bribery.

Polly Peachum – age 19 – 33: Soprano range to G. High belt and combination voice to D. Smooth transition to strong head voice. Very bi-polar. From sweet to total demon instantly. Sings involved dramatic-comedic story songs. The Peachum’s only daughter and prize asset. An apparent innocent who falls in love and marries MacHeath, she inherits the ability to master the ways and morals of a criminal.

Lucy Brown – age 25 – 40: Soprano. Coloratura flexibility. Range to strong high A. More classical sound than Polly. Lucy's Aria is operatically melodramatic. Daughter of Police Chief Brown. A willing and loving pawn of Macheath. Fakes a pregnancy to try and keep Macheath as her own.

“Low Dive” Jenny Driver – age 28 - 45

Mezzo to F. High combination voice. Must compete energetically and vocally with Mack in the Pimp's Ballad. Big exposed Philosophical Solo in Salomon Song. Needs sustained intensity. Prostitute and former lover of Macheath. Despite her fondness for Mac, she twice betrays him for cash. Lives in a brothel.

SIX MUSICIANS NEEDED

Musicians may perform small acting/singing roles as well. While there is flexibility in the sharing of instrumentation, musicians who play multiple instruments are needed. The following is called for in the score:

  1. Percussion – timpani and full percussion. 2nd trumpet if possible.
  2. Guitar- banjo, bandoneon, Hawaiian guitar, mandolin, cello if possible.
  3. Horns – trumpet, trombone, double bass.
  4. Trumpet
  5. Alto, Soprano and Baritone Saxophone, flute, clarinet, piccolo.
